Ingredients

Orange peel, lemon peel, cinnamon, cloves, fennel, star anise, cardamom.

Recipe

Add one bottle of red wine (or 6 cups apple cider) to a saucepan. Place 2–4 tbsp of spice blend in a muslin bag, cheesecloth, or enclosed strainer. Add to the pot with 1 sliced orange (optional) and ½–1 cup sugar. Warm over medium heat until sugar dissolves, then reduce to low and simmer gently for 30 minutes (do not boil). Adjust sweetness to taste. Remove spices and serve hot.
